BEFORE YOU HIRE

Check the company before the job starts.

A strong directory record is a starting point—not a replacement for clear scope, permits, insurance, and a written price on your specific job.

Start with the direct business

  1. Call the number shown on the business’s own website or public directory record.
  2. Ask who is coming, which business is responsible, and whether the worker is an employee or subcontractor.
  3. Ask for the service-call fee and a price range before they leave for your address.

For home-improvement work

  1. Check the company’s PA Home Improvement Consumer Information registration where it applies.
  2. Ask for proof of insurance and whether a permit is required in your municipality.
  3. For electrical, plumbing, roofing, or structural work, ask your town directly about its local permit and licensing rules.

Get the agreement in writing

  1. Make sure the business name, phone number, scope, price, and payment schedule match what you discussed.
  2. Do not approve a new total just because a worker is already at the door.
  3. Save your estimate, invoice, messages, and before/after photos.

One question matters most

“What is the expected total for my job?” A starting price can be legitimate, but it is not the answer.
